Sell Lines
Sell lines are added in order to convince the costumer to purchase the magazine. The best way to do this is by using alliteration, unique and intriguing stories. Many magazines also a variety of fonts to make the text stand out, they also use colour and highlight to make the sell lines look more appealing.
It is sell lines that cause sales because that is there purpose. The sell line is usually the magazine's motto (if it has one) underneath the masthead (ex. "The Latest Entertainment News Now").
Sell lines can vary from short catchy phrases to quotes and slogans.

Contents analysis
There is clearly a basic layout that Kerrang was using. Repeating this design can help people recognise your magazine and create a style for the magazine, something that you would expect. Although in the top left there is a different variation of a Kerrang contents page. By having numerous basic layouts it makes the creating process a lot easier but it also gives the reader the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the page and where specific things may be. For example, the main story is most likely as the top half of the contents page.
I noticed that some of the images are from what looks like live shows that the bands had performed at. This allows the reader to feel as though they were partially there as they can attempt to see and feel the atmosphere and what the show was like. By using composed photos like the top two contents pages this can sometimes be more appealing as they can look a lot more professional.
The contents page on the top right consits of one main image. A medium close up that is framed so you can't see his full head. By doing this and composing the subject to stare into the lens it looks more dramatic, therefore more effective. Also by only using one image the page looks a lot more organised and clearer as there are less distractions. Although this can sometimes look more effective it is often lees informative and less conventional for a rock magazine as generally rock magazines are often packed with stories and pictures.
You want a contents page to be brief but informative, it doesn't necessarily have to sell itself as much as the cover as at this point they are already intregued, it does however have to keep them hooked.
Genre research
Genre Research
What genre are you basing your magazine on?
I am going to base my magazine on the rock genre much like Kerrang, this is because it is my preferred music choice. Also I feel as though there is a wider range of ideas that I can create and I also feel as though it would look more effective, especially due to the conventional colours (white, black, red and orange) and style of a rock magazine.
The brief history of the rock genre has developed greatly over the years.
Rock encompasses many styles, which helps keep the music from ever running the risk of growing stale.
Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States.[1][2][3] It has its roots in 1940s' and 1950s' rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by rhythm and blues and country music. Rock music also drew strongly on a number of other genres such as blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical sources.
Musically, rock has centred on the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with bass guitar and drums. Typically, rock is song-based music usually with a 4/4 time signature using a verse-chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse. Like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political in emphasis. The dominance of rock by white, male musicians has been seen as one of the key factors shaping the themes explored in rock music. Rock places a higher degree of emphasis on musicianship, live performance, and an ideology of authenticity than pop music.
By the late 1960s, referred to as the "golden age"[1] or "classic rock"[2] period, a number of distinct rock music sub-genres had emerged, including hybrids like blues rock, folk rock, country rock, and jazz-rock fusion, many of which contributed to the development of psychedelic rock, which was influenced by the counter cultural psychedelic scene. New genres that emerged from this scene included progressive rock, which extended the artistic elements; glam rock, which highlighted showmanship and visual style; and the diverse and enduring major sub-genre of heavy metal, which emphasised volume, power, and speed. In the second half of the 1970s, punk rock both intensified and reacted against some of these trends to produce a raw, energetic form of music characterised by overt political and social critiques. Punk was an influence into the 1980s on the subsequent development of other sub-genres, including new wave, post-punk and eventually the alternative rock movement. From the 1990s alternative rock began to dominate rock music and break through into the mainstream in the form of grunge, Brit pop, and indie rock. Further fusion sub-genres have since emerged, including pop punk, rap rock, and rap metal, as well as conscious attempts to revisit rock's history, including the garage rock/post-punk and synth pop revivals at the beginning of the new millennium.
Currently in the charts for rock music are artists such as, You me at six. They are becoming increasingly popular. There is also The darkness, Bullet for my valentine and many more.
The magazines that focus on this genre are, Kerrang, obviously. There is also classic rock, rock sound and more.
Here are some music videos (HERE) so you have a n idea of the music and the videos which they create.
The costume that rock artists often use are generally very fashionable and most often black. It has become increasingly common for them to have piercings and tattoos, especially sleeve tattoos.

Colour scheme research
When choosing a colour scheme I need to use colours that not only relate to the genre of my magazine but compliment each other. This is important due to colour been one of the most appealing things to the human eye. Bold and bright colours suggest the magazine is lively, dark colours suggest the magazine is most likely within the rock genre due to they are the colours society link to conventional rock music. Subtle and light colours work well to compliment and balance bright and dark as it adds balance.
I am going to look at some magazine covers so that I can see and compare a variety of colour schemes and why they chose those specific colours. Straight away I noticed that for the majority of the covers the subject on the main image is wearing colours similar to the colour scheme. It is most likely that the colour scheme is determined before even taking the pictures. I also noticed that around a lot of the text there is a black outline to make the text bolder. I also noticed that it has became more of a convention that rock magazines always have the colour white and black. For my magazine I am going to most likely follow this convention and use black and white, for other colours I am debating between red, as this is a very common colour for rock magazines. Or yellow as this is also very common and works really well to highlight specific areas. Perhaps I shall use both as I have also seen both of them used on a range of magazine covers.

Photography and composition of a music magazine
The top left image however only features one subject. It is clear this time that he is obviously the lead singer as he is holding a microphone. Using props can be very effective as the can signify the subjects role and even more important the magazines role. By using the vest you can see the large proportion of tattoos. The bottom left image has the girl leaning into the camera making her stand out more. Compared to the other images I think that this image is the least effective because of the poor lighting to the right of her face, although this is most likely deliberate I feel as though it removes clarity from the image. The final image, the bottom right is very effective as the medium close up works really well and shows of a the majority of her costume. I also noticed that the costume and colours used in this image all relate and look effective together.
Social class
I will be aiming my magazine at any of the three main classes, lower working and upper. More specifically my magazine will is aimed at people that favour rock music which is generally teenagers. This is because of the ideologies that the typical teenager is rebellious, much like how the rock music genre is portrayed, this is reinforced by the lyrics and style of the many rock songs. Although some rock songs aren't "rebellious" the use of loud instruments are still seen this way.
From searching the Internet and looking at some reader profile research for other magazines as well as concert videos on you tube I can see that there are a variety of male and female teenagers and young adults that like this genre but I also noticed that there were more females.
To adhere to there needs i will advertise numerous exclusives and show familiar conventions of the typical music magazine. I will also try to use an image that has an appealing composition for the cover. I shall also use a colour theme that suggests rock music and is very expressive.
In terms of pricing for my magazine i looked at numerous magazines and the average price that i saw was around £3.99. However it is becoming increasing popular to subscribe to a magazine to receive each issue on a regular basis, often weekly issues. It is also becoming more popular to purchase magazines using your devices like you mobile phone for example. Not only is this cheaper, by around half price. Kerrang for example on the Google play store varies between £1-£2. The only downfall is that you will not receive and free gifts or toys.
If I were to include any gifts or prizes for my magazine they would most likely be items that relate to the artists inside, things like exclusive merchandise that is exclusive to my magazine but for a popular rock band. Not only does this make the item exclusive it makes the readers feel part of a social group or a society, as they can recognise other readers of the magazine. In terms of the actual gift it would be things like guitar picks, drum sticks , musical accessories as well as posters and stickers things like this. Not only are these small and realistically cheap enough to give away in a magazine and still make profit, they would still appeal to people that don't play any musical instruments as they can be used as decoration or accessories.

Logo
When designing my logo I had to ensure that it was memorable, effective and catchy.
Not only is the masthead the title of my magazine it is a symbol, it is what people should recognise the magazine for. Such logos like Kerrang and NME for example, both use a the same iconic style for each magazine, this is so the reader and audience can and will recognise the magazine for.
The guidelines for creating a logo are to ensure that it is simple, memorable and timeless. Here are some examples:

Here are some of the most iconic logos, even though numerous of them are just an image and include no text, due to pop culture and advertising I can identify them, like apple, Nike Starbucks, Pepsi and more. Since my logo is for a magazine I will be focusing on font and colour, I also noticed that in the iconic logos that include font generally include some form of fill or small effect that makes it different from a basic font style.

Genre Research
I am basing my magazine on the rock genre, this is because it is currently becoming increasingly popular and contains numerous artists and bands that i listen to.
The rock genre is a contemporary musical genre said to include each one of the diverse musical types of rock and roll, the stereotypical rock band consists of the instruments guitar, drums, bass there are also many other instruments that can be added but those are the typical instruments used.
Here is a brief history of the rock genre:
The primitive rock is derived from a range of sources, mainly influenced by blues, rhythm, country, gospel, jazz and folk. It has evolved over time and became its own distinguished genre with many sub genres relating to it.
the origins of rock music first began to show in the 1950's and was referred to as rock and roll. At the end of the 60's, the rock music was combined with other genres to create genres like folk rock, jazz-rock fusion and more. It was in the 70's when rock began to incorporate influences of soul, funk and Latin music. Also in the 70's rock developed numerous sub genres: soft rock, hard rock, progressive rock, heavy metal and punk. Since then rock has been creating more and more sub genres all distinctive in there own way from the 80's and 90's there has been: glam metal, thrash metal and alternative rock, rock grunge, Brit pop, indie rock and nu metal.
Here are some of the distinctive rock music icons:
Currently in the rock music charts are:
At number
1: Nickleback-Rockstar
2:Bon Jovi- Livin' on a prayer
3:Fall out boy- My songs know what you did in the dark
4:Foo fighters- Best of you
5:Paramore-Still into you
What i noticed straight away from the charts is that some of these songs were released years ago and already made it into the charts but are now again in the charts, this is because the audience of rock music varies in style. I think that this is because of how society portray things especially younger teens, because they look up to older teens like from school for example because the song was so popular then they listen to it so they can relate.
From the images above you can begin to see a theme within rock music, like the guitars for example there are numerous images including guitars and bold colours contrasting with black. Here is a music video that upkeep's this theme (Link).

Props and locations
Here are a variety of props and locations that i collected from Internet sources. I feel that these images are generic and can look effective alongside the subjects that I choose. I think that using a range of props and locations throughout my magazine will look very effective especially since it gives the impression of the magazine being more professional as it looks as though it collected images from a number of places and bands.
In terms of props, I feel as though I will most likely use the generic props for a rock magazine. Items like, guitars, microphones, drums and other instruments. Although these are very predictable instruments they often look very effective and fitting.
For locations the most preferable place for my magazine would be a scene that resembles a recording studio. Studios are very effective as they create a strong sense of exclusiveness due to the fact the audience don't see the making of the music but only the finished outcome. And studios are were the artists go to complete the song. I could also use settings like town or possibly the woods. By using a city centre with images that look as though they were taken like an armature gives the sense of the outgoings of the band is been documented. Alternatively I could use a setting like the woods and compose the band so the shoot looks like a professional photo shoot.
