Genre Research

I am basing my magazine on the rock genre, this is because it is currently becoming increasingly popular and contains numerous artists and bands that i listen to.
The rock genre is a contemporary musical genre said to include each one of the diverse musical types of rock and roll, the stereotypical rock band consists of the instruments guitar, drums, bass there are also many other instruments that can be added but those are the typical instruments used.
Here is a brief history of the rock genre:
The primitive rock is derived from a range of sources, mainly influenced by blues, rhythm, country, gospel, jazz and folk. It has evolved over time and became its own distinguished genre with many sub genres relating to it.
the origins of rock music first began to show in the 1950's and was referred to as rock and roll. At the end of the 60's, the rock music was combined with other genres to create genres like folk rock, jazz-rock fusion and more. It was in the 70's when rock began to incorporate influences of soul, funk and Latin music. Also in the 70's rock developed numerous sub genres: soft rock, hard rock, progressive rock, heavy metal and punk. Since then rock has been creating more and more sub genres all distinctive in there own way from the 80's and 90's there has been: glam metal, thrash metal and alternative rock, rock grunge, Brit pop, indie rock and nu metal.

Here are some of the distinctive rock music icons:

Currently in the rock music charts are:
At number
1: Nickleback-Rockstar
2:Bon Jovi- Livin' on a prayer
3:Fall out boy- My songs know what you did in the dark
4:Foo fighters- Best of you
5:Paramore-Still into you

What i noticed straight away from the charts is that some of these songs were released years ago and already made it into the charts but are now again in the charts, this is because the audience of rock music varies in style. I think that this is because of how society portray things especially younger teens, because they look up to older teens like from school for example because the song was so popular then they listen to it so they can relate.

From the images above you can begin to see a theme within rock music, like the guitars for example there are numerous  images including guitars and bold colours contrasting with black. Here  is a music video that upkeep's this theme (Link).

Here are some music magazines in  the rock genre, i will use these as influence.
Rock sound, Kerrang, Revolver and Alternative press
